Project Profile

Long Island Rail Road
Commuter Service

Tokyu Car (1st series)
and Kawasaki (2nd)
Bi-Level
Commuter Coach

Transit Performance Engineering provided support to the development of Mark I Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Bi-Level Commuter Cars. TPE reviewed the carbuilder's (Tokyu Car) design drawings (provided by Comeng, Australia) and structural ananysis, and inspected car manufacturing at the supplier's facility (Yokohama, Japan). This car is seen in the illustration above. A couple of years after the development of the prototype and delivery of 10 Tokyu Car coaches to LIRR, the transit agency ordered 110 similar cars (Mark II) from Kawasaki. TPE was invited to provide support on this contract also. We have been involved in evaluating carbuilder proposals and have taken part in interviewing potential builders. Our engineers have reviewed the design documentation and stress analysis submitted by the carbuilder. We are also providing the QA services in Kobe, Japan, where TPE has installed the resident inspector on the project.
